Kyle Dunnigan: An Interview
Kyle Dunnigan: An Interview

Courtesy Kyle Dunnigan

Kyle Dunnigan is the latest in a series of quality comedy shows coming to Springfield this fall. Kyle is a veteran of Comedy Central, with standup routines on Comedy Central Presents and Cedric the Entertainer Presents, a recurring role on Reno 911 (he played Craig, a serial-killer boyfriend), and a stint on NBC's short-lived Howie Mandel vehicle Howie Do It. The good people at the Gillioz arranged a phone interview with Kyle just hours before he boarded a plane to head to Springtown. Here's what he told us.

Note: The show starts tonight at 8 p.m. $15 cover ($12 students).

GO: You have a lot of stand-up experience? Besides the Comedy Central stuff, where else have you performed?

Kyle: I've done Conan three times and Jimmy Kimmel Live. I did Craig Furguson's show and last year I was on Howie Do It. Before that I was on Cedric the Entertainer presents.

GO: So who was more fun to work with, Cedric or Howie?

KD: Oh, Cedric. Howie, he's... he's a germaphobe.

GO: But did he introduce you to any of the briefcase ladies from Deal or No Deal?

KD: Yeah, he did actually. He was always trying to do that... it was a really good weekend, actually. I was dating someone at the time, though, so it was tough.

GO: Have you ever been to Springfield?

KD: You know, I think I have, but I travel so much I don't really remember... if you can believe that.

GO: How much are you on the road?

KD: I mainly just gig. I go out a lot, leave town for a couple of days and then come back.

GO: Where are you located?

KD: L.A.

GO: What's the funniest city you go to? Like, does one city just have people that crack you up more than others?

KD: I like getting out of L.A. Anything that's not L.A. L.A.'s the worst.

GO: Why is that?

KD: There are so many performers here, they don't really seem to go shows as much for fun. You go to other towns and the come out because they want to laugh. L.A. seems different.

GO: Who are some of your main influences and comics you admire?

KD: Dana Carvey, Steve Martin. Chris Rock is a really good standup.

GO: Carvey? Is that where your character comedy came from?

KD: No, that just came from my childhood. [Craig]... I don't know where I got that.

GO: What can we expect from your show?

KD: I use a looping machine at one point... wait, I'm not going to use that [in Springfield] actually. But yeah, I do a lot of different stuff. Some impressions.

GO: What's your best impression?

KD: Right now I'm working on a Tim Gunn. It seems to be going well.

GO: So, on a scale of 1 to 5, 5 being the most raunchy, how "adult" is your show?

KD: A solid three. Don't bring a 12-year-old.

GO: Who's the best comic you've ever met or worked with?

KD: Brian Regan is the best comic. He's just naturally funny, he's clean. He does comic situations with just a really interesting take on it, and he has a very funny voice.

GO: So are you hanging in Springfield for the night, or are you headed out after the show?

KD: I'm flying right out afterwards. I don't see towns, just airports. But I hear Springfield has a lovely airport.

GO: Aww... I was going to give you some advice on party spots. But you're right, we do have a nice airport. Brand new.

And, if that's not preview enough, here's a YouTube of Kyle's act (this is the part with the loop machine, so it won't ruin Friday's set):

Stupid bastard Kyle Dunnigan batters the elderly to get gigs. He fits into L.A perfectly.
