Interesting stuff afoot at Wilhoit Plaza, where Moxie Cinema is Tweeting about Farmers Gastropub, opening in November in the former Ophelia's spot in Wilhoit Plaza (431 S. Jefferson Ave.). Gastropub is a funny word, coined in more urban locales, for a bar where you can also eat.
The Downtown Springfield Facebook page has a little more information: Farmers will apparently use 100 percent recyclable to-go materials and purchase meat and produce from only local farmers. That's pretty exciting.
And honestly, that's all we know at this point. We'll keep digging. In the meantime, we're excited!

Gastropubs usually have really fancy almost fine dinning bar food. It will be interesting to see if the menu is just the regular wings and nachos or will it bring something new to Springvegas. Time will tell...
I ate Fish and chips there last friday, and it was definitely the best I've had. I've also talked with the owner, and sold him some meat and produce, so I can vouch for his desire and sincerity in buying local ingredients. Definitely worth checking out.
Yes, my husband and I ate there this week, and we also had the fish and chips, although I can't wait to try their other items. I am not normally a fish eater, but this was so light and flaky! Mild, not fishy flavor. The coating was light and crispy-a perfect coat--not a piece of fish in heavy breading.
The fries were also hand cut and fried, and were delicious. I'm so glad they are here, and am looking forward to our next meal here.
We had a horrible experience at your Farmers Gastropub, which started from the moment we arrived. Once we were finally seated, we were placed in the corner by the kitchen door and forgotten about. The service was lacking at best (we had the blond with dark glasses who has no clue of what to do) and the food overpriced for what we got. We went for dinner and a couple of drinks and it took 2 hours.
It took 20 minutes to get our Martini's. Once we finally got our drinks, my wife ordered the Quiche at $8.00 and got what appeared to be a reheated frozen quiche smaller than a personal pan pizza with a few greens on the side. My son had the chedder burger and it was burnt. My daughter-in-law ordered the sliders and they were rare, go figure. I had the fish and chips which were good, but for $12.50 I expected more than a couple of small pieces of fish. We decided to order desert because I love carrot cake, but that turned into a 30 minute ordeal. The waitress kept apologizing for it taking so long telling us that we had to wait for it to be plated, when all along I could see the desert 10 feet from me in the case.
We spent almost $100.00 last night and all we were left with was bad tastes in our mouths. If this business continues on this path, it will not be there very long. I know I will tell my friends, who in turn will tell theirs.
There is a new forum in Springfield that is trying to bring farmers, customers, restaurants, etc. together.
