Your Monday blog roundup

What to read while trying to frantically get your work done so you can leave at 3 p.m. for St. Louis Cardinals Opening Day. (Not that we'd know about that, or anything...)

• There's a pretty important City Council meeting tonight to discuss the upcoming budget. Jason Wert, as always, will be on it. Life of Jason

• Two ex-GO staffers (Chris DeRosier and Scott Perket) have joined forces on a much-needed, dedicated local music blog—it's actually the same url as DeRosiers short-lived solo effort. Two drumheads are always better than one... The... Read more »

Weekend recap

Blog roundup to follow here in a bit:

• The St. Louis Cardinals came, they saw, they froze their tail feathers off. Two frigid games at Hammons Field ended with the Springfield club winning on Saturday, their first in four exhibition tries against St. Louis. Friday night fans were treated to an Albert Pujols home run, which was nice. The stadium looked great, the games (and new emcee J. Fotsch) were hilarious. All was well but the weather. Looks like another great season at Hammons Field.

A few highlights:

—Our pitching staff will be impressive: P.J. Walters, particularly, looked good on Saturday.

—Centerfielder Jon Jay is buff. Men, if you know what's good for you, you won't let your ladies sit in the centerfield grass area. Too... Read more »

The Set List: Bigger than Dakota Fanning

The Set List has no idea what this week's title means, but it sure is funny.

Obviously, the big event of the weekend is the two game tilt between the St. Louis Cardinals and Springfield Cardinals. And, obviously, most of the tickets are way, way gone. But GO will be there, milling about before tonight's game with the players, trying to get the scoop on this year's team. Look for a special weekend blog post with all the info from the field and the stands.

Now on to the rest of the weekend. Fortunately there are several great events. Read more, after the jump (which is 100 percent Uptown Girls-free!)

Losing the Beautiful Losers

We'll post a full Set List a bit later this afternoon, but we thought it was worth giving a brighter spotlight to this bittersweet show: The Beautiful Losers (myspace.com/imabeautifulloser) are playing their final show as an offical "Springfield" band. The guys are moving to Chicago and tonights gig at The Outland is a farewell (though it wouldn't shock us if they made it back here some time). They haven't played locally as much recently, but three years ago you would have been hard-pressed to find a more popular band in Springfield. Eric Smith, Trevor Hougardy, Rob Lowery and Chris Dickey will be missed.

So, if you fancy a $5 concert (and who doesn't) make this your 9... Read more »

Some Afternoon Inspiration

I don't normally do this, link out to national sites just for the sake of entertainment, but it's the day after deadline and I was in the market for some inspiration.

Deadspin.com, Gawker Media's sportive manifestation, is one of my daily (let's be honest here—bihourly) reads. Today's post from contributor Big Daddy Drew kinda made me tingle a little bit. The last thing I read that made me more self-aware was Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance, and that took me three months to get through. I might have just been exhausted.

Some... Read more »

Blake Ahearn: NBA Player

We saw this a few days ago and sort of brushed it off—couldn't be, right?

But it's true: Former Missouri State sharpshooter Blake Ahearn (whom we interviewed back in December 2006) is a member of the Miami Heat, signed to a 10-day contract with the injury-riddled team. Here's the proof. He's the first Missouri State/SMS player to hit the NBA (that we know of, but we don't follow the Association like we once did) since Winston Garland in the late '80s and early '90s.... Read more »

The GO Team has options

From rodeos to comedy, concerts and theatre, here’s what the GO Team is excited about this week:

The Adventures of Tom Sawyer opens at Springfield Little Theatre this Thursday. Shows run throughout the weekend at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Friday and Saturday with 2:30 p.m. matinees on Saturday and Sunday. We’re excited to see 11 year old Colton Kastrup in the lead role.

Friday night we’ve got a lot to choose from. Personally, the GO Team will be headed to the Springfield Cardinals game vs. St. Louis at Hammons Field. If you weren’t lucky enough to snag tickets, you have options. Check out the TWIZTD concert at Remmington’s Downtown. Or head to the rodeo at Ozarks Empire Fairgrounds indoor arena at 8 p.m. If you miss the rodeo... Read more »

A break from routine

We usually post our weekly events and marketing update on Wednesday morning, but we've got a couple of music-scene updates for you: Not that we want to make either of them. Look for our weekend GO Team shindigs this afternoon.

First of all, there's been a lineup change for the GO Music Awards. The Dropouts, true to their name, dropped out of the Music Awards yesterday because the band's drummer will be on tour with the Osmonds (he'll be the one without orange skin and shiny teeth). So, we're headed back to our vote tally list, and will announce the replacement as soon as we can get the band confirmed.

Second, and even more depressingly, Steve Greene, the subject of so much joy on... Read more »

It's Good To Be Alive, Reason No. 29: Cheap Ladies' Underwear

In the spirit of tomorrow's new issue of GO Magazine, The Cheap Issue, we bring you a deal from one of Springfield's newest, most risqué lingere shops:

Adam and Eve is having a mad March sale (Notice I didn't throw out the March Madness cliché—we're so over this damn tournament. Thanks for nothing, Georgetown.) The deals: all bras $10 or less, all panties 3 for $10 or $15 (depending on style) and all corsets are $15 off label price. With wedding and bachelorette party season upon us, there's no reason not to pick up some pretty things. The sale runs through March 30.

Adam & Eve is located at 1332 E. Republic Rd, 417-889-6521.

For more cheap hints, don't forget to pick up the new issue of GO Magazine tomorrow... Read more »
