Your Weekly Geek: Special iEdition

Well, I’m not sure when this was officially announced, but I just learned about it last night, so to me Apple snuck this in under the radar.

I have known about the new 3.0 OS update for a bit now, and have been really excited about it; all the new features make the iPhone what it should have been from the beginning, what with copy and paste, mms (you know, like even the free phones from AT&T can do), and just overall improvements.

But now they announce the 3g [s]. A three-megapixel camera, video capabilities, and all the features of the new OS, all at a very affordable price point (provided you are eligible for upgrade).

I think one of the neatest features—although I’m not sure that I would ever benefit from it—is the inclusion of a magnetic compass. Okay, that’s kind of cool. I do wish, though, that they would put in an FM modulator, so I could listen to my music on my radio without other adapters, but I guess beggars can’t be choosers.

The OS update will be out June 17, and the new device will be out June 19, but pre-orders are happening now.

Here’s a full list of the features from the apple site.

On another note, also from the Apple tree, comes the iPad. No, this is not some hipster's loft, all decked out in sleek white and sliver with matching Apple products. This is the Kindle “killer” (we’ll see). This, from what I can find, is all rumors so far, but it’s all the buzz on the “interwebs” right now.

If you don’t know what a Kindle is, never fear, I’ll over-explain it for you. Pretty much, it’s an Amazon-made cannibalized notebook, with black and white display, designed for the purpose of selling more e-books from the Amazon site. It’s a hand-held device with simple functionality and wireless support for getting new material to read on the plane, in the living room or, most commonly, in the bathroom.

Well, the iPad is (allegedly) going to be similar, but look more like a larger iTouch device, and I’m sure will work almost solely with iTunes. Though you will be able to import your own books, iTunes will probably want to destroy how you have them organized, so it can do it its own way…

If this does kill the Kindle, I wonder what all those magazines and newspapers that have sold subscriptions for it are going to say.

Anyways, enough with iDevices for today…

Is anyone else really disappointed that MMS will not be available until sometime later in the summer at the earliest? AT&T really dropped the ball on that. They've surely known about this for months.

It's very annoying! Also who the hell needs a compass?

Yes!! I am very annoyed about the mms, it was the one feature that I was really looking forward to, since not all phones except email.

and yes again, 3.0 was announced some time ago, ATT should already have everything in place.. I mean hell it’s not like this is some kind of new technology that they are on the forefront of, and if you throw a rock (away from the iphones) in an att store your more than likely going to hit a phone that does this already... so what do they really need to get ready?
