It's the Independene Day weekend. There's an upside and a downside to having it on a weekend—on the one hand you don't get as much time off work, on the other you can party all you want on the 4th and not worry about getting up the next morning (sorry, pastor).
So what's going on this weekend? It's heavy on Fourth and (at least on Saturday) light on everything else, but that's okay. Remember when we were all giddy about AWESOME, EXPLOSIVE MOVIES coming out on this weekend?
Yeah, neither do we.
Friday
I Love America at Springfield Underground, Free, 11 a.m. to 11 p.m.
James River Assembly's annual crush of music, airshows and fireworks this year features national recording act Push Play with a 5 p.m. set. The fun lasts all day though, starting at 11 p.m. Fireworks are later, so bring a lawn chair and plan on staying the day.
Chain Reaction—A Tribute to Journey at Branson Landing, Free, 8 p.m.
There are all kinds of fireworks displays in Branson this weekend, including tonight at Branson Landing. First, though, it's a Journey tribute act. Put on your best Steve Perry wig and sing along, you smalltown girl you.
The Miss Firecracker Contest at MSU Tent Theatre, $10-$22, 8:15 p.m.
Overtly combative beauty queens face off in the final night of shows for Tent Theatre's second show of the 2009 season.
Drop Dead, Gorgeous, He is Legend, Before Their Eyes, Then There Were None at The Outland Ballroom, Cover TBA, 8 p.m.
It's the concert of the weekend, featuring indie acts Drop Dead, Gorgeous and He Is Legend (and others) upstairs at the ballroom. Give 'em a listen online and then hit the show.
Saturday
Fireburst 2009 at Table Rock Lake, Free, all day
This is Kimberling City's entry into the Branson 4th of July orgy, and it's a day-long festival of waterborne fun, including a flotilla, food, games and fireworks later that night.
Metalfest with Offset, Extreme Hate Fequency and Hessian Crucible at The Outland Ballroom, Cover TBA, 8 p.m.
It's not all "Yay America" tonight: There's some serious metal-shredding going on at the Ballroom. See these bands and enjoy living in a country where hearing damage is so readily accessible.
Springfield Cardinals vs. Frisco Roughriders at Hammons Field, $6-$24.50, 7:10 p.m.
What's more American than baseball? Nothing! Tonight the Cards take on the Frisco Roughriders, with a fireworks display after the game.
Sunday
Springfield Lasers vs. Kansas City at Mediacom Stadium, Ticket prices vary, 7:05 p.m.
The Lasers' second match of the season comes against their rivals from K.C. Snap up your season tickets now and be sure to get a seat when Anna Kournikova comes to town next Friday.
Art Bentley at Brew Co., Free, 9 p.m.
Art. Wings. Beer. Pizza. Pool. You know the drill.
Shawn, Marcus and Richie at Ebbets Field, Free, 9 p.m.
Another great night of music, cover free, at Ebbets Field. Keep one eye on the game and another on your plate.
Have a great, safe Fourth of July!
