Not to kick a dead horse, but it's hot out there. How hot? Hot enough for a third layer of deodorant as you head out to a weekend full of excellent shows, movies and other stuff to do.
Sweltering goodness after the jump.
Friday
Chords of Wallkill, Babies Don't Drink Milk, Jesse James Wax Museum at Nathan P. Murphy's, 7 p.m., Cover TBA
This show is worth the cover (whatever it is) if just for the band names. Fortunately, at least the first and third bands are high-quality. The other reason to go is Murphy's itself, still the most charismatic venue in town.
Lonestar at the Ozark Empire Fair, up to $25, 7:30 p.m.
The missouristatetix website is cryptic about whether there are still tickets available for this show, but you'd better hope so. The country hit-makers are great, and the ticket gets you into the fair, which rocks.
Laurie Morvan at Cartoons, $12.50 at hte door, 9 p.m.
The Blues Down Under Series tonight features this teacher-by-day, blues-rocker-by-night. Heat up the dance floor with Laurie and the band.
Saturday
Tom Petty Tribute at The Outland, $5, 9 p.m.
You know all the hits, but chances are the folks who'll be playing know the more obscure stuff, and will make this one of the best shows of the summer. Mark our words.
Ocean's Thirteen at Founders Park, Free with ticket from Chesterfield and Doling Family Centers, Mediacom Ice Park, Busch Municipal Building, and the Mediacom general offices ($5 otherwise)
The most recent (and second-best, in our humble opinion) Ocean's move plays tonight in Founders Park. These guys are so cool, you might not even notice that it's 100 degrees.
Puddle of Mudd and Saving Abel at the Ozark Empire Fair, up to $20, 7:30 p.m.
It's hard-rock time at the fair, and these two bands are sure to please. Look for the Q102 folks... it's their bag, baby.
Sunday
Downtown Ghost Tours at Founders Park, $17, 7 p.m.
We've had a lot of calls about this event, which leaves at 7 p.m. (get there earlier—space is limited) and takes you on a tour of downtown's haunted spots, including Landers Theater, the Patton Avenue corridor and other stops. Spooky!
Shawn and Marcus at Ebbets, Free, 10 p.m.
Send the weekend out in style with some cold, cold beer and a set from Shawn and Marcus of Speakeasy.
'Til next week!
