I'll admit it. I'm a sports fan, and during a desk-lunch of a frozen meal, or between writing assignments (hey, I don't take smoke breaks), I'll flip over to deadspin.com and read the latest snark-fueled headlines. Rarely, if ever, do I find anything with a local tie, much less a post involving someone I know.
So imagine my surprise at this post, which refrences this weekend's Tournament of Champions, won by Word of God Academy (from Raleigh, NC) and the squad's all-world player John Wall. Apparently University of Kansas coach Bill Self attended the tournament to watch Wall and others, and the News-Leader's prep sports reporter/editor/columnist/workaholic Allen Vaughan overheard an interesting conversation following the championship... one that, at least according to Deadspin, might constitute a recruiting violation. Click here to read Vaughan's full column.
Full disclosure: I went to college—was even in the same fraternity—with Vaughan. He is a hardworking reporter with a Master's degree and a sterling reputation. He also knows more about college basketball than anyone I've ever met. If he says it happened, it happened.
For the record, Springfield Central finished fifth in the tournament, beating St. Raymond's from The Bronx on Saturday. Glendale finished seventh, Ozark eighth.
