The Set List: Frankly, we don't give a damn

The Set List is not a movie junkie. The Set List leaves the movie business to these guys. And this guy. But we do enjoy watching movies, and the iconic moments that can result from the really good ones (or the train wrecks that result from the bad).

This Sunday, like you, we'll be glued to our TVs to see if Slumdog Millionaire can hold off its competition, none of which we really see making a dent in the vote tally, save possibly Milk. We kinda hope local boy Brad Pitt can win his first Oscar, but we feel quite strongly that his career-defining role is still somewhere over the horizon (or possibly came in Thelma & Louise).

So, on with the weekend. To celebrate the Oscars, each event comes with an apropos-0f-nothing memorable movie quote. You're welcome.

Bonus: Dan Chilton of the Moxie picks his Oscar winners at the 417 Blog. Read it now!

Friday

Pearl and Sequel Dose at Cartoons, 9 p.m.
Here's a fantastic show you'll be able to see play together (or one after the other) at Rock'n Ribs in April. Lots of cover music, lots of energy and lots of drinks (for you).
Apropos-of-nothing movie quote: "There's no crying in baseball!"

Wes Jeans at Nathan P. Murphy's, 8 p.m., Cover TBA
Blues rock! Blues and rock! Wes Jeans makes a stop in Springfield at the smoke-free Murphy's. It's the best show of the night.
Apropos-of-nothing movie quote: "I coulda been a contender."

The Music Man at Landers Theatre, 7:30 p.m., $15-$25
The gaiety of old Broadway finishes its run at Landers Theatre this weekend.
Apropos-of-nothing movie quote: "I see dead people."

Saturday

Sertoma Chili Cookoff at the Expo Center, 11 a.m., $15 at the door
A big day in Center City begins at 11 a.m. with the Sertoma Chili Cookoff. It's one of the biggest charity events of the year, featuring drinks, music and all the meat and spicy tomato sauce you can shove down your gullet.
Apropos of nothing movie quote: "A census taker once tried to test me. I ate his liver witsome fava beans and a nice chianti." (Better hope Dr. Lecter doesn't have a booth.)

Mardi Gras Pub Crawl downtown, 8 p.m., wrist bands TBA
This is where the night gets sloppy (in a good way. Hopefully). The downtown Mardi Gras pub crawl, which usually features beads, is tonight from 8 p.m. to bar close. Buy your wrist band at one of the 18 or so participating downtown bars, and we'll see you there.
Apropos-of-nothing movie quote: "I know it was you, Fredo. You broke my heart. You broke my heart."

Continuously Saucy Renaldo  ft. Speakeasy at the High Life, 9 p.m., $5
This is the wonderfully named cover band persona of Speakeasy, one of Springfield's most popular bands. We're sure they're saucy, but continuously? That takes some effort.
Apropos-of-nothing movie quote: "What is your major malfunction, numbnuts."

Sunday

A... My Name is Alice at Missouri State's Balcony Theatre, 2:30 p.m., $12-$16
Girl power is out in full force at Missouri State, thanks to this witty compilation of a stage work with some fine local actresses.
Apropos-of-nothing movie quote: "Don't forget what happened to the man that suddenly got everything he ever wanted ... He lived happily ever after."

It Takes Life to Love Life at the Vandivort, 2 p.m., admission TBA
This play, written by local playwright and director Gretchen Teague, is the story of a family coping with ALS. It's a story inspired by the fight of Gretchen's own daughter, Haley Stevens, and was performed last summer at the Fringe Festival in Edinburgh, Scotland. Proceeds benefit the fight against ALS.
Apropos-of-nothing movie quote: "1.21 gigawatts!"

Oscar Party at the Gillioz, 6 p.m., $75
This Oscar party is not the cheapest way to go, but it's definitely the fanciest. KSPR will be broadcasting the Oscars live inside the Gillioz, you'll walk a red carpet, and you'll get complimentry drinky-poos and hors d'oeuvres.
Apropos-of-nothing movie quote: "I'll be back."

And so will the Set List. 'Til next week!
