Ask anyone who has worked for GO, past or present, and they'll tell you that the magazine came to life in our weekly staff meetings. There we dealt with the serious, the absurd, the hilarious and the almost-scandalous... in addition to dealing with the business of publishing a magazine. This week we want to give some of the players in those meetings a chance to say goodbye, or share a memory, or whatever. We hope you'll join us on Thursday, after the final blog is published, for our GOing Away Party at Big Whiskey's, starting at 5:30 p.m.
I have had a great time being part of GO for the last several years. My main job was to get GO out to our racks on the Wednesdays GO was published.
But my favorite times working for GO were in our weekly meetings, every Thursday at 8 a.m. Since we are a younger group and we have no HR department these meetings tended to be more "open and descriptive" than most staff meetings. In these meetings I would learn that I was going to be a cover model. Not for fashion, but for a food issue, shoving a "Ghetto Burger" in my face while having my picture taken (cover at left).
I also volunteered for a story where I had to do Spinning, Pilates, body step, and Jazzercise in a four-day period. I still hate walking by the body step classroom... bad memories! ... I learned the word "perineum" while doing that story ... We learned that our former and current sales reps have a large vocabulary, but lack the knowledge of how to use certain words appropriately ... We learned that our publisher (Gary Whitaker) is an amazing free-hand artist ... I learned that I get oddly upset if somebody takes the only blueberry donut ... We learned that Matt, our editor, needs lots of light when putting on his shoes in the morning ... We learned that our current Art Director is a nacho aficionado ... We learned A LOT about Kevin O'Riley and we learned we could count on him for always having and idea for a sidebar in our annual Sex Issue ... I learned that observing drunken people in bars made for great blogs ... We learned we have a #1 fan on My Space, Facebook, and springfieldgo.com who is always happy to share her opinion indeed ... We learned that a pooping turkey is still funny three years later ... Over the last four or five years I have learned a whole hell of a lot from my GO Magazine coworkers and had an exorbinant amount of fun, which is why I can't wait to learn what the next four or five years has in store for us.
