Hypes and Gripes

• Hypes to Longhorn Grill, which is one of the few places in town to offer frog legs on the menu.

• Gripes to Millwood for not cutting back on fees, despite being in no apparent rush to rebuild its clubhouse. Golfers, who still pay a pretty penny to tee it up, are deprived of a cool 19th hole, not to mention members who lost their neighborhood restaurant.

• Hypes to the Kum and Go sweetie who recently let us off the hook when we came up short on change on a recent caffeine stop. But it wasn’t just a penny or two—it was seventeen cents!

• Gripes to motorcyclists. Yes, any death on any road is tragic, and most drivers could stand to be more careful. But before you go on the news and complain about automobile drivers every time a rider is hit, please make sure 50 percent of your own kind aren’t driving like asshats. You might start with three guys going 60 mph down Division and Glenstone after pulling out of Rosa’s Cantina on a recent afternoon.

• Hypes to the Springfield Cardinals for a great season. The players looked good, the All-Star game was a hit, and J. Fotsch was a fine addition to the on-field crew.

• Gripes to Missouri State University for bringing in former Lady Bears basketball coach Cheryl Burnett to serve as a consultant. It’s not so bad that Burnett is back, but the timing is off. You just know that, despite the school’s motives, unless the Lady Bears’ record and attendance improve this year, the team’s stuck-in-the-’90s boosters and fan base will be calling for Burnett to replace Nyla Milleson just two years after leaving a gig at Drury. That would be patently unfair.
