Grilled cheese and soup: Fall Foodie classicss

Dear Mr. Foodie, it feels like fall outside (sorta). What's a good food to match that mood?

A. Grilled cheese and soup. If it actually gets cold this month, head to the store. Don't buy supermarket tomato soup (you'll find better examples at Nearly Famous and The Grotto restaurants), get a carton of Campbell's Select Gold Label Golden Butternut Squash Soup (about $3). It's the color of harvest time and goes down silky with a sweet-savory finish.

Foodie's doctrinaire guide to grilled-cheese ingredients is as follows:

• Sam's Club sells a heavy “peasant” bread that's great. So is DARK rye. Wonderbread = boooring.

• Use mild goat cheese plus baby spinach.

• Hyper-sharp Irish cheddar with the new Grey Poupon Coarse Harvest mustard.
