Indie film events

May 12-16 is a big week for indie cinema in Springfield. It begins on Monday, May 12, when Moxie Cinema shows Box Elder, a coming-of-age college flick shot by University of Missouri students. The movie was filmed in Columbia, so if you MU grads are jonesing to see some CoMo on the big screen, this is your chance. Box Elder shows one night only, so get your tickets for the 7 p.m. show now. A Q&A with writer/director Todd Sklar follows.

Additionally, the recent SATO 48-hour film challenge has become a Super Bowl of sorts within Springfield’s sizeable amateur film circuit, bringing out everyone from seasoned vets to high school kids to participate. On May 16, the SATO winners will be honored at The Rising Star Awards Ceremony (the name’s a plug for sponsor Liberty Bank). Tickets are $5. The ceremony will be held at the Keyes Gallery at 7 p.m. with an after party to follow.
