2-Minute Review: Pacific Kitchen
The newest player on the Chinese scene is Pacific Kitchen Chinese Food (839 N. Glenstone Ave., 417-868-0069). They’ve done little to make the place look like anything other than a former Captain D’s, but it is clean, which was enough for me at a recent Friday lunch. The service was attentive, though not formal (as the girl eating a cookie while pulling sodas proved).
The menu sells the staples cheap and keeps the rest basic. Knowing any local Chinese joint is measured by its cashew chicken, I ordered the daily special ($3.89 with two won tons, an egg roll and fried rice). My friend ordered the sweet and sour special (all white meat, an extra 50 cents).
The food was good, if not surprising, and very fresh. The cashew chicken wasn’t at all gelatinous and the egg roll was nice and crunchy. The portions were large. I tried a bite of my friend’s sweet and sour and liked it better than the cashew.
Overall I’d put Pacific Kitchen near the top of Springfield’s cheap Asian-food heap. If you want exotic, go to Thai Express, but if you like the staples you won’t go wrong here.
