Three Apple Eats

Fuji apple chicken salad—Panera Bread Co., $6.59 plus tax
This huge leafy-greens salad, topped with grilled chicken, Gorgonzola cheese and walnuts, is given a massive apple kick by crispy apple chips and an apple vinaigrette dressing. It is hands-down our favorite thing on the Panera menu. Multiple locations in Springfield. Go to panera.com

Apple pie—Sunshine Valley Farm Café, $2.56 per slice

Okay, you’re going to have to drive a bit outside Springfield to get this one…and you can’t get it until spring, when Sunshine Valley Farm reopens…but it’ll be worth the wait and drive, we promise. This huge slice of fresh-peeled-and-baked pie has almost three pounds of apples per pie. And as you know, three pounds of apples a day keeps the doctor away. 8011 E. AD Highway, Rogersville, 417-753-2698

Autumn baked apple—Ophelia’s Wine & Tapas Bar, $7
The limited but very spiffy menu at Ophelia’s only has three desserts, but we’re willing to bet this puff pastry stuffed with seasoned Granny Smith apples and mascarpone (cheese) is first-rate. What kind of wine goes best with an apple pastry? We’re sure we don’t know, but experimenting ought to be a blast. 431 S. Jefferson Ave., Ste. 160, 417-862-7200
