The Jalili Empire ‘Bubbles’ Over
Bijan’s Under the Tower has long been a highly respected but highly underutilized space—until now. Mike Jalili, owner and culinary mastermind at Bijan’s, Flame and Touch, tells us he is converting the banquet space into Springfield’s first champagne lounge, Bubbles, possibly to open as soon as late February. The idea is to do for champagne what bars like Romeo y Julieta’s have done for the martini—make sparkling wine the focus while still offering other quality drinks. The core menu would be centered around sparkling wines with different types of garnishes, as well as drinks that include bubbly as the main ingredient (think the Anastasia at Level 2, heretofore the king of fancy champagne-utililizing drinks).
Jalili says Bubbles will be open Tuesday through Saturday and have a limited appetizer menu, and will include pass-through access to the Boogie, the Jalilis’ dance club that fronts on South Avenue (though, in our humble opinion, the target clienteles sound decidedly different). Could this signal a pending change at the Boogie? We’ll see.
Something’s Fishy at Doe’s
Doe’s Eat Place, famous for its huge steaks and stuffed tamales, has announced a crowd-pleasing new addition to its menu: an 8 oz. grilled salmon filet. Guys: There is now no excuse for your non-meat eating significant other to put you off from eating at Doe’s. Don’t worry, the steaks, tamales and shrimp are still available.Icy Hot
The Missouri State Ice Bears are scorching hot heading into the postseason. The club stick-and-puck squad finished the regular season in the Mid-America Collegiate Hockey Association with a perfect 14-0 record.
At press time the Ice Bears were ranked number four in the ACHA’s Central Region. That ranking, plus a 21-9 overall record, should be enough to propel the Ice Bears into the Central Region tournament February 22-23 in Chicago. They’ll compete in their league tournament February 16-17 in East Alton, Illinois.
