So long to The Studio? Bye-bye Belmont? Keep up-to-date with local music happenings.

What’s the Future of The Studio?
Lou Whitney told us last week that he is selling the building that houses The Studio, his recording company on South Avenue, as well as the photography studio his wife owns next door, on the corner of South and Walnut. Whitney also says, however, that he’s not getting out of his busy recording business—he just thinks it’s time to sell his downtown property. Keep your eyes here for updates on when and where Lou sets up his new studio.
Are The Rugs Finished?
According to guitarist Richie Rebuth, the Rugs’ July 28 show at the Outland was their last official gig. Singer Matt Dampier is finished with college and is moving to Kansas City to look for work, effectively ending the group’s status as a regular draw in Springfield’s music scene. The group will likely play occasional shows when Dampier comes back to town, however, so keep your eyes peeled for Rugs reunion gigs.
Local Multi-Band, Multi-Genre Concerts in the Works
Frustrated with the decrease in the number of venues to play in, (see next item) local musicians are banding together to plan shows with bands of different genres to build support for the music scene. Currently the plan calls for a Wednesday-night “Springfield Bands Holding Hands” concert every two weeks featuring three bands, each playing a different style of music, and a low cover charge. To introduce the idea, plans are also in the works for a day-long outdoor concert September 22. Venues are still being worked out for the outdoor show and the regular events, but keep an eye on these pages for the latest news as it develops.
Bye-Bye Belmonte
It looks like Park Central East’s all-ages, indie-friendly hangout, The Belmonte, is closing up shop and reopening elsewhere at a later date. What’s next for the local music scene?
