Dining Notes
So what WAS Austin’s Smoke House anyway? Sadly, we’ll never know. Three Austin’s were opened earlier this summer in former Back Yard Burgers locations on East Sunshine, in Nixa and in Branson. Two weeks later, they were closed. It’s a bit of a mystery. Kevin Rolf, who still owns seven Back Yard Burgers locations in the Ozarks, including three in Springfield, says he has no plans right now to re-open BYB’s in those spots.
• So long, Kaldi’s. Between our last issue and this one, one of our favorite local coffee joints closed up shop. We’re left deprived of smoothies and Kaldi’s delicious hummus, though Kaldi’s kiosk in Missouri State University’s Plaster Student Union is still open (and accepting gift cards).
• There are dates set for the opening of two new ventures from Paul Sundy and friends. First, Whole Hog BBQ, at the corner of Campbell and Sunshine, is slated for a September 15 soft opening, followed by a grand opening starting September 25. Whole Hog is a Memphis in May-winning barbecue-maker, with a few other locations throughout the lower Midwest. Also, the second location of Parlor 88 Lounge on East Sunshine, across from Sam’s Club, is “100 percent go”, Sundy says. He hopes to begin construction the first of September, with a best-case-scenario opening in mid-to-late November.
