Just like momma used to make, if your momma was named Tony.

2-Minute Review: Famous Spaghetti & Subs

There aren’t too many restaurants in Springfield I haven’t checked out. There are even fewer I’ve never driven by. I guess that’s why my dinner at Famous Spaghetti & Subs (834 E. Division St., 417-864-8669) came as such a pleasant surprise.

With homemade pasta, red sauce and Italian bread made fresh daily (“from scratch—no preservatives,” the menu touts), Famous offers a daily special that includes a generous portion of spaghetti, two Italian meatballs, a half loaf of garlic bread and a drink for $4.95. I agree, that is special. And what’s even more special was the fact that it really was good. The bread was slightly sweet and nearly addictive, the spaghetti noodles thick and cooked to the ideal consistency and the red sauce had a unique but flavorful taste.

All their food is served on disposable “to-go” products, whether you’re dining in or out, and while that’s not a very green way to serve up grub, it is definitely sanitary. However, if you fall in love with the food and want to reduce, reuse or recycle, Famous provides a bucket you can wash and return for a refill the next time you’re craving spaghetti, ravioli or tortellini. (All steals at $8.99, $10.79 and $13.69 per half gallon, respectively.)

The menu offers something for everyone, from the Torpedo Sub—$5.69 for a 16” with ham, salami, cheese and lettuce on a loaf of home-made Italian bread—to the Ozark Family Feast—$17.49 for a half gallon of spaghetti, a loaf of garlic bread, a Torpedo Sub and your choice of a soda or a loaf of bread.

Overall, we’re sold on Famous Spaghetti & Subs for their great deals, tasty, like-momma-makes-it food and convenient, take-home orders.
