How to pitch a tent

Learn to pitch a tent so you don't have to pitch a fit.

Pitching a tent is one of the most frustrating things a person can try and do. The poles, the flaps, the wind—and that ground, it’s so hard! Here are a few things you can do (besides reading the manual) to make pitching YOUR tent as easy as possible.
  • Make sure you have several heavy, smooth objects at hand to flatten the tent out as you pitch it. Use your body or your friends’ bodies if you have to.
  • If it’s windy, fasten the pegs on the upwind side of the tent first.
  • Make sure the tent’s vents face into the wind: this will help with ventilation and reduce morning condensation (no one wants to wake up in a wet, droopy tent).
  • If there are firmly rooted trees or heavy rocks nearby, tie your pitched tent to those instead of driving stakes. It’s easier.
  • Don’t try to do it yourself. Get your friends to help you pitch a tent.
